Writer. Richard Stowe has had a number of opinion-editorials published in the Hartford Courant since May of 2001. His commentaries have also appeared in the Stamford Advocate, Greenwich Time, Danbury News-Times and San Francisco Examiner. Eco Man columns have appeared in the New Canaan Advertiser since March of 2007.
Transportation Advocate. Through Rail*Trains*Ecology*Cycling, Richard Stowe advocates for advancing bicycle rights on commuter trains and for seamless regional rail service. Mr. Stowe earlier advocated for improving commuter rail through Rail Transit Environmental Coalition, a group formed to advocate for at-grade double track through San Juan Capistrano and throughout Orange and San Diego Counties except for a section of track along narrow sections of the San Clemente beachfront. Mr. Stowe has been affiliated with a number of bicycle advocacy organizations including his current participation in Elm City Cycling, a New Haven-based group. A bicyclist and when not cycling, or riding a train, a pedestrian, Mr. Stowe has never owned a car and infrequently travels by air.
Environmentalist. Richard Stowe has served on the boards of two volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) non-profit environmental organizations. Since 2004, Richard Stowe has served as the president of New Canaan Environmental Group; prior to that he served as a board member on the Environmental Council of Stamford from 1996 to 2002. He grows edible fruits and veggies organically in his patio.
Athlete. A swimmer, a cyclist and now a runner, Richard Stowe bicycled across the United States fifteen years ago. Prior to that, Mr. Stowe rode from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas and San Diego to Denver, Colorado with a group of cyclists. Mr. Stowe occasionally cycles from New Canaan, Connecticut to Manhattan. Mr. Stowe, an ocean swimmer, has twice participated in the “Rough Water Swim” in La Jolla, California and other 1 or 2-mile ocean swims. For the past two years, Mr. Stowe has participated in Multiple Myloema 5K in New Canaan. Last year at the 5K, he finished 46th overall.
